Tai Chi - A brief introduction

5:16 PM

Tai Chi is a self-defense and body-training technique originated from China centuries ago as a maturation of several similar but separate exercises. The more formal name of this technique is “tai chi chuan”, which is loosely translated into "supreme ultimate boxing."

The state for a regular session is usually a system of body-movement demanding mind-presence and personal attention to every sensation and detail. In contrast to the traditional martial arts, the Tai Chi movements are rather slow and static which create an array of “dynamic” postures called “form.” Therefore, “form” performances contain the vigorous, relaxing yet powerful feels due to the fact that the movements are developed from human body’s structure towards natural laws of gravity, leverage, and inertia.

The best timing for a Tai Chi session should be at sunrise and sunset. During these times, the flow of natural energy is exchanged from day to night and vice versa which is pertinent to the mind-body exercise Tai Chi session.

Even though Tai Chi isn’t a famous workout method as it is believed to be more suitable to the elderly, its real benefits have been scientifically proved. Particularly, Tai Chi practice may help:
  • Improve balance and coordination
  • Improve sleep quality
  • Improve cardiovascular fitness
  • Improve everyday physical functioning
  • Slow bone loss following menopause
  • Reduce high blood pressure
  • Reduce the number of falls
  • Relieve chronic pain.
